Exchange rates are among the statistics most people expect to find on the web, but this is not always as simple as it seems.

Firstly, do you want:

  • historic or current rates?
  • daily or monthly rates?
  • average or end rates?

Secondly, you need to be sure of the authority of the site you are getting your figures from.

These questions are important because the answers to them may affect the source of information you choose. Either way you should consider carefully whether the information you find is suitable for the purpose you need.

Making sure you have the right exchange rate

In selecting a source of exchange rates it is important to bear in mind the purpose that you intend to use the rates for and the type of rate you want. In assessing whether a particular source is suitable for your purpose, you might want to consider these questions:

  • Is it important that the rate is from a particular market, e.g. London or New York? N.B. most sources of exchange rates on the web are based on the US dollar and will be quoting data from the US markets
  • Is it important that the rate is a closing rate or an average over a day, week, month etc?
  • Is the rate you want "official" in some way? e.g. the Library & Information Service maintains a links page on HM Revenue & Customs approved Exchange Rates and SEC approved US Dollar exchange rates are available from our Official and Unoffical US Dollar and US Dollar-Euro Exchange Rates page.

Where possible we have indicated the source of exchange rate information and its type but you are advised to be aware of the source of rates quoted on any particular site.
