Sadly, Robin Liddell passed away suddenly on 20 June.
He was a senior partner at Armstrong Watson & Co working for both the Carlisle and Leeds offices. He retired in 2001 after 44 years of service.
Robin was a man who was very passionate about the Institute. He served as a council member for the Institute as both an elected member (1998 – 2011) and a co-opted member (2011 – 2013). He was well known locally in Cumberland and in the Northern region for his involvement with the Institute. He was a very active council member who regularly attended branch and District Society meetings to keep everyone up to date with the news from London. He saw this as an important role of a council member. He had a great sense of duty. He also served on ICAEW Ethics Standard Committee (2006-2013).
He was Chairman of the Cumberland Society of Chartered Accountants and President of the Northern Society of Chartered Accountants. He considered it an honour to have undertaken both these roles. He enjoyed attending annual dinners, his chain gang reunions, AGM’s and lunches over the years to keep in touch with the many friends he had made through the ICAEW. If there was a “bit of a do” in the region – you were most likely to see Robin there! He always enjoyed meeting people and getting to know them. He simply enjoyed the crack. Robin was also a member of the Worshipful Company of Chartered Accountants.
Robin became President of the Institute of Financial Accountants in 2012 and carried out this role for two years. He was rightly very proud of this achievement.
Robin was passionate about sport and was a season ticket holder at Leeds United. He enjoyed many trips to Elland Road with friends. As well as following Leeds United he was also vice President of Carlisle United football club (and former finance director). He followed both clubs to both their home and their away fixtures – such was Robin’s enthusiasm. He also enjoyed watching the cricket at Headingly and the England rugby at (as he would call it) “Twickers”.
Robin lived in Rockcliffe with his wife Christine. He has two children, Simon and Tina.
He truly was a wonderful person, a gentleman and one of life’s characters, who always had a cheery disposition and a smile on his face. He will be sadly missed by all those who had the pleasure to know him.
