Manchester Business Growth Hub’s Green Growth Services – Could you benefit?

ICAEW members based in Greater Manchester, or working with clients located in Greater Manchester can benefit from the range of free advice and support offered by the Business Growth Hub’s Green Growth Service.

The project is 50% ERDF and 50% Greater Manchester Combined Authority funded and can provide a range of complimentary services including:

  • Resource Efficiency Review at client sites by specialist advisors to identify opportunities to save them money on their energy bill.  The team recently won  a prestigious ENDS Sustainability award reflecting its proven track record at not just identifying, but also working with companies to achieve cost savings – over half of its recommendations cost nothing to implement.
  • For lower energy users, meanwhile, where energy bills may not be a critical budgetary focus the project is able to provide tailored advice to help companies create and implement an environmental policy which can give them a USP to open up new markets.
  • A capital grant pot of up to £12,500 or 50% of relevant costs to help GM SMEs deliver projects which will save carbon and costs. Richard Ousey (ACA) who trained as a Chartered Accountant in Manchester and now heads up the Green Growth team notes:

“The grant fund gives us scope to support a tremendous range of carbon saving projects, with recent approvals including LED lighting and Compressors alongside more bespoke machinery and equipment including Digital Rectifiers and Multiple Winding Machines. We’re open to any good carbon and cost saving application whether from Accountancy practices themselves, or their wider GM client base”

  • The project also offers all GM companies, the opportunity to companies to search for local providers of low carbon technology through its Low Carbon Network.
  • Finally for  larger companies or membership organisations, whether in, or out of GM, the project has also funding to carry out a series of specialist supply chain masterclasses – in Manchester or client site -  to help them  ‘green’ their GM supply chain.  “We’ve already delivered these across 9 of the 10 GM Authorities, and are delivering our first large company masterclass program this month” notes Ousey.

“We can bespoke these around clients needs to include content spanning Green Credentials, Quick Wins to Energy Savings, Renewable Energy, Staff Engagement, Lighting, or other more technical areas depending on needs of your client.”

For both accountancy practitioners and their wider client base, Ousey sees massive scope for the Green Growth service to provide a valuable service.

“In previous projects our funder targets meant we had to focus our support on medium and high energy users, but in the current project we have a far wider remit to provide support to all GM SMEs regardless of energy spend.  We’re thus really keen to speak with Accountancy practitioners about how we can frame our support, whether that looks like a free resource efficiency review at their site, or that of a key GM client, or delivering a workshop for a group of members or their clients around shared green issues or opportunities,”
