Graduating from Cambridge University as a biologist / organ scholar, Sam travelled to East Africa and was advised that ‘accountancy was a useful and needed skill’ there. She qualified in 2000 with Mazars in Sutton, focusing largely on charity and SME clients, in anticipation of what she would find in Kampala, and emigrated in 2001.
Since coming to Uganda, Sam spent two years in a local audit firm, and eight years with ACLAIM Africa Ltd managing the outsourced accounting bureau and establishing the financial consultancy and training department. After auditing, training, mentoring and advising, she belatedly took a real finance job for three years as Financial Controller of a tourism company for whom she managed 6 accountants in 4 locations, followed by 18 months as Financial Management Advisor to VSO Uganda.
Since 2004, she has also been an Associate with Mango (Management Accounting for NGOs, based in Oxford), and has carried out numerous assignments with them including training, course design, & tools development. Sam has had the pleasure of travelling in Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Ethiopia, Senegal, Thailand, Turkey and UK on Mango assignments.
Mother of three young children, she currently works part time with Childs I Foundation as Financial Management Advisor, runs a couple of small businesses and continues to carry out assignments for Mango. After serving as Treasurer of Kampala Music School for nine years, current pro bono work includes keeping the accounts of her local church.
