The country's finances

Comment from Martin J Warren, Director for Wales & The South West, in advance of the Chancellor’s 2017 Autumn Budget Statement.

Where is the economy going and does anyone know your views

The UK economy continues to lurch sideways as little or no progress is made with the EEU and prospects of a hard Brexit increase. There is talk of Government agencies beginning to formulate plans for such a scenario which can only increase the nervousness of potential investors and further delay any ambition that our businesses may have to expand.

The Business Environment Remains Difficult

There was no blog from me last month as August is my family time when we go down to the Mediterranean and do little but enjoy the sunshine. However it was very noticeable this year, whilst driving down through France and into Spain, that we saw far fewer British number plates amongst the cars and motorhomes wending their way South. Perhaps it is true that there was a trend in the UK for a 'staycation'. Certainly it felt like that to us and, no wonder, given that spending a Euro this year seemed to be the same as spending a Pound Sterling!

Gender diversity in the professions

Some of the South West’s most successful female professionals came together an ICAEW West of England Roundtable on gender diversity at CBRE in Bristol.

Introducing ICAEW Southern Society

The May 2017 AGM of the Southern Society of Chartered Accountants (SOSCA) saw a number of key changes, designed to expand on and accelerate the development of the society that was started under my presidency last year.

Are you getting the most from your ICAEW membership

We all pay our annual subscription, sometimes moan a little about what we get for our money and then forget it and get on with the job. I know that I was rather like that in my 30 odd years of being a member in business and I may well have missed out on opportunities to broaden my horizons much earlier in my career as a result.

About us

The society serves over 2,800 members in Cornwall, Devon and Somerset (excluding the North Somerset and Mendip areas)

The society’s members come from accountancy practices small and large and from a range of business, public sector and Third Sector interests. The district society is deeply engaged in the development of the local economy and regards the development of the profession, especially among students and young professionals, as a crucial part of its work.

It also acts as a link between the ICAEW in Moorgate Place and members in the district.
