Introducing ICAEW Southern Society

The May 2017 AGM of the Southern Society of Chartered Accountants (SOSCA) saw a number of key changes, designed to expand on and accelerate the development of the society that was started under my presidency last year.

Are you getting the most from your ICAEW membership

We all pay our annual subscription, sometimes moan a little about what we get for our money and then forget it and get on with the job. I know that I was rather like that in my 30 odd years of being a member in business and I may well have missed out on opportunities to broaden my horizons much earlier in my career as a result.

If you are not already aware ICAEW have recently restructured and reduced the 8 previously defined regions into 4.

Big Night Out for the South’s Chartered Accountants

The Grand Harbour Hotel, Southampton welcomed 170 of the south’s ICAEW chartered accountants, their guests and fellow professionals, for the Southern Society of Chartered Accountants’ (SOSCA) annual dinner on Friday 24 March.

South West stakeholder engagement

We are in the process of mapping out all key stakeholders across the South West. ICAEW has over 13,000 members in the South West region which equates to a very strong voice in business.

About us

SOSCA was set up to assist its members in both their personal and professional development by providing an active programme of events that includes a combination of practical skills and CPD courses, as well as social events and networking opportunities. SOSCA also aims to promote the profession of accountancy as well as the ICAEW brand.

CPD

SOSCA uses SESCA Enterprises as a CPD provider. Please visit their website for our courses or keep an eye on our events page. SESCA offers a variety of courses at various locations across the Southern district. You can also use your ticket in the neighbouring districts, South Eastern and Thames Valley. They offer a flexi-ticket which is one of the best value-for-money CPD discount schemes.

Discount scheme

The SOSCA Committee has decided to offer reduced ticket prices for members who qualify for one of ICAEW’s reduced annual membership rates (due to current unemployment, low income or a career break).

Events

SOSCA host a variety of events throughout the year. Bookable events will always be advertised through our events page. Occasional events are done via invite only. We gather this information from the preferences you sign up to. Please make sure your check your online preference centre every year.

Committee

The SOSCA committee meets 4 times a year at various locations around the district. Some of these are at booked venues and others are at local businesses or practices. The committee is made up of office holders which include a President, Deputy President, Vice President and a Treasurer. The rest of the committee is made up of a mix of Business and Practice members. We also make sure that reps from the student committee, the younger members committee, the town group and the joint professions group sit on the committee.

Town Groups

Dorchester Town Group

The Dorchester Town Group runs fortnightly CPD courses every month, except January and August. The Dorchester CPD programme covers a range of topics including tax, audit, charities, dealing with HMRC and many more. Cost is £40+VAT per course.

Portsmouth Sole Practitioners’ Group

Our meetings act as a forum for sole practitioners to discuss practical issues affecting them.

We meet every 3rd Thursday of the month, except January, July and August.

Southampton Tax Discussion Group

The group is aimed at those who either specialise in tax or are general practitioners with a special interest in tax. Attendees help each other with practical tax tips they have gleaned and in return seek the advice of others on current client conundrums, all on a no-names and confidential basis.  Most (but not all) discussion tends to be about owner-managed businesses.

Bournemouth Tax Discussion Group

The Bournemouth Tax Discussion Group was set up twenty years ago by a small group of sole practitioners to provide a means of sharing knowledge and information.

Discussion mainly but not exclusively revolves around tax (In June we had a discussion on the EU referendum) and occasionally we have an external speaker on a subject which is of interest to us as accountants but which may be peripheral to our work, for example we have had a speaker from a payroll agency and another on the subject of Auto Enrolment.

We also have a Google group which we use to communicate between meetings, if we want to tap the experience of the group.

Most of the members are sole practitioners working from home and between them they have extensive knowledge and experience. However, not everyone has the same knowledge and experience which is what makes the group so valuable.

We would welcome new members and you are invited to come to a meeting with no commitment to join, so that you can see what the group offers.

Our next meeting is on 17 November. 2017 dates will be posted shortly.

Dates: We meet on the third Thursday of the month (excluding August, December and January)

Location: St Leonards Village Hall

Time: 6.15pm for refreshments, with the technical side of the evening starting at 6.45pm and finishing at 8.45pm.

Fee: The membership fee is £20 per annum to cover refreshments and there is no meeting charge.

Student society

SCASS is run by students for students; the committee is made up of a group of chartered students just like yourself, who meet up once a month to discuss any matters or issues that affect local chartered students. It also works hard to arrange a variety of events for members, a good few of which seem to revolve around alcohol!

How do I become a member of SCASS?

As a chartered accountant student, you are automatically a member SCASS and will receive regular communications and details of events from the Committee.

The primary aims of SCASS

SCASS has four key objectives: to provide support to students on all matters relating to their study and professional development, and on any other issues which affect them as provisional members and students of the ICAEW; to arrange professional, cultural, social and sporting events for students; to represent our students and to act as a channel of communication between SCASS members and SOSCA (our local district society), the ICAEW Student Council (ISC) and the ICAEW; to promote ACA training; membership and participation in the activities of SOSCA; the ICAEW and the accountancy profession generally.

Young Chartered Accountants’ Group (YCAG)

Young Chartered Accountants’ Group (YCAG) - for members up to +10 years post-qualification.

As part of the Institute’s commitment to maintaining excellent links with its members throughout their career, SOSCA created YCAG (Young Chartered Accountants Group) to look after the interests of its younger qualified chartered accountants (up to +10 years post-qualification) and to bridge the gap between the existing student and senior societies in the southern region.

How do I become a member of YCAG?

Any ACA member is automatically a member of this group for the first 10 years after qualification.

Primary aims of YCAG

The main aims of YCAG are:

  • To foster a business network for young chartered accountants working across both Public Practice and Commerce and Industry
  • To ensure that members are actively engaged with both SOSCA and the Institute, and understand the value and services it provides
  • To support members’ career development by providing practical skills courses and advice
  • To provide social opportunities for members to meet and support each other during their career endeavours

The YCAG committee works to put together a programme of events each year which includes a combination of social, networking and practical skills and careers events for members post-qualification.

Joint Professions Group (JPG)

Joint Professions Group (JPG) was formed by the Southern Society of Chartered Accountants, part of ICAEW (Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales), and represents some 20 professional bodies whose members are based in the South of England including West Sussex, Surrey, Wiltshire, Dorset, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.

The primary aim of JPG is to connect professionals by providing opportunities for joint business and social events, training and professional networking.
