Are you new to a finance role and thinking about your next career move? Or do you have a specific business or leadership challenge? If so, ICAEW mentors and coaches can help you. The majority of mentees are in senior leadership or board level roles and are sponsored by their business.
What was your main reason for choosing mentoring/coaching?
I wanted to develop my career and move into a more senior role. I recognised I needed support to progress and initially enquired about professional courses and further qualifications to develop my skills although I wasn't clear what I should prioritise. I hadn't considered mentoring; this was suggested and explained to me and I felt this would be the best way to identify exactly what skills I needed to develop in order to progress.
What will you do differently as a result?
The key thing is having someone else focused on me as an individual. To help clarify issues and follow a plan. I am much more structured in my general approach, I take time to step back and assess, prioritise and plan. I also focus more on the bigger picture and how I fit into it rather than just focusing on my role, needs or aspirations.
Would you recommend mentoring/coaching to a colleague?
Yes, definitely. Because you have an individual totally focused on your needs not generally like attending a course. It's not about teaching, more about independent support to help you work out for yourself what you want to achieve. Someone who has been there and done and can see where you want to go. Someone who shares their experience.
Mentoring helped me to be more objective about my development, to focus on the key issues, let go some of the things that were holding me back and plan a way forward. It gave me confidence and reassurance to pursue my goals and identify what I needed to do to progress.
