Sources for statistics on student numbers in the accountancy profession.

Students of the world's largest professional accountancy bodies

An inaugural world survey of the accountancy profession was published in the December 2009 edition of The Accountant (Issue 6073) which provides details of student numbers for 37 professional accountancy bodies in 24 countries. In addition to this, a league table of the 'Top 20 World's largest professional accountancy bodies by students' was published.

Students of Accountancy Bodies in the UK

The Financial Reporting Council has published an annual survey of the profession called Key Facts and Trends in the Accountancy Profession since 2002 which provides the following statistics for the each of the six Chartered Accountancy Bodies in the UK and the Republic of Ireland:

  • Students registered worldwide
  • Location of Students
  • Sectoral employment of students worldwide
  • Gender of students worldwide
  • Pass rates

The current survey and an archive of previous editions are available through the FRC website.

Historical Statistics

The ICAEW published an annual update on education and training statistics between May 1980 and 2003/04. The ICAEW Library & Information Service holds copies of the update - see Library holdings: Education and training statistics for further details.

Headline statistics on the number of ACA students have been included in some editions of the ICAEW annual report.

Students of other accountancy bodies

The monthly publication 'The Accountant' from VRL publishes a series of country surveys which detail the number of members and students for each accountancy body in the country surveyed, including breakdowns by age, gender and sector.
