Credit for prior learning

Credit for prior learning (CPL) is our term for exam exemptions. Students with accounting/business related degrees or professional accountancy qualifications may be eligible for exemptions against some of the Professional Stage exams.

Credits are not automatically allocated. Students need to apply for credit for any relevant exam module. However, as an employer, you can decide if you are happy to allow your student to apply for CPL. You may decide to require your students to take all of the exams irrespective of any previous qualifications they may have. So, they should only apply with your permission.

  • Credit may be awarded where a student can provide evidence to show that they have covered a subject area in a previous academic or professional qualification.
  • Students are advised to submit applications for credit at least 14 days before the closing date of the relevant exam session to allow sufficient time for their application to be assessed. They cannot apply for credit if they have already attempted that paper.
  • Students do not need to be registered as an ACA student in order to submit a CPL application.
  • It is not in a student's best interest to claim, or try to claim credit for a subject they have not fully covered or are not confident with.
  • Credit is not available for any of the Advanced Stage exams
