Our privacy policy
The Institute believes it is very important to respect the privacy of individuals, and to make only safe and ethical use of the information that is provided through electronic channels.
Where we collect information we are doing so in order to offer you better services, both on the website and in the rest of our operations.
If any of the information we hold about you is inaccurate we will do our best to correct it quickly once you notify us. You can update your contact details yourself online.
Some of the information you give will be held in databases: we will ensure that these are secure and can only be accessed by authorised people.

Our website staff are fully trained in the privacy policy and are aware that ensuring it is fully implemented is an important part of their jobs.
The implementation of the privacy policy is directly supervised by senior managers of ICAEW.
The information we collect and how we use it
We do not collect any financial information on this website except where you choose to pay online via debit/credit card for subscriptions, exam fees or to join a faculty.
We do not collect any mandatory demographic information, but we may ask you to provide some information voluntarily including, for members, completion of a questionnaire.
We may also ask you to complete surveys or questionnaires on the website from time to time. These will always be voluntary, but we may use the information from them to personalise the web site and to target marketing to relevant users.
We will ask you for your email address if you wish the Institute to contact you in this way, receive update information and newsletters through email or if you wish to pay online. You can delete or change your email address at any time or unsubscribe to particular types of email.
We may collect management information on our email campaigns, for example whether you have read an email sent by us, when and how many times. This information will be used to improve content and services and to inform groups of users about relevant products and services.
The website offers you the opportunity to change your preferences about receiving conventional postal mailings. To change preferences, login and select 'My page' from the top horizontal menu.
We will use any or all of the personal information we collect about you to build up a profile of you use of the website and its facilities. This information will be stored under your name on ICAEW’s system.
Who will have access to the information?
Any information you give will be available to the Institute, including its faculties and district societies. Details of international focus members may go outside of the European Economic Area to other international focus members. However, no financial information will go outside of the European Economic Area.
No information about you or your use of the site will be made available to any other organisation without your consent other than as anonymous usage statistics.
Information about domain names or IP addresses will not be included in statistics made available to other organisations. If you choose to add your email address to your membership record, it will not be made available to any third party.
We may, however, need to share your information with our service providers and agents for the purposes set out in this privacy policy but we will ensure that it is protected.
We may disclose personal data in order to comply with a legal or regulatory obligation.
Information you give in response to surveys and questionnaires on the website will be used in two ways:
- By ICAEW itself to help determine policy and to help improve its services to members
- By third parties that ICAEW may make the information available to for market research: in this case, the information will be made available only in the form of anonymous statistical reports
We may follow up some survey responses by phone or email.
The website compiles user profiles automatically to help us improve the content, design and performance of the site. These profiles will be used only for this purpose and will not be released to any other organisation.

Data protection policy
This is a statement of data protection policy adopted by the Institute.
ICAEW needs to collect and use certain types of personal information on for example current, past and prospective employees, members, suppliers, clients/customers, and others with whom it communicates.
In addition, it may occasionally be required by statute to collect and use certain types of information to comply with the requirements of government departments.
This personal information must be dealt with properly irrespective of how it is collected, recorded, used and disposed of - whether on paper, in a computer, or recorded on other material - and there are safeguards to ensure this in the Data Protection Act 1998.
We regard the lawful and correct treatment of personal information as critical to successful operations, and to maintaining members' confidence in us.
To maintain our reputation and integrity as an open and professional organisation we need to be fully compliant with this legislation.
To this end we fully endorse and adhere to the Principles of data protection, as enumerated in the Data Protection Act 1998 and will :
- Observe fully conditions regarding the fair collection and use of information
- Meet our legal obligations to specify the purposes for which information is used
- Collect and process appropriate information only to the extent that it is needed to fulfil operational needs or to comply with any legal requirements
- Ensure the accuracy of information used
- Apply strict checks to determine the length of time information is held
- Ensure that the rights of people about whom information is held can be fully exercised under the Act
- Take appropriate technical and organisational security measures to safeguard personal information
- Ensure that personal information is not transferred abroad without suitable safeguards

- Internet Explorer 6 or above (Firefox is not supported by the learning management system)

- Suitable network or dial-up connection *
*In both these cases the 'Java Script' option needs to be enabled in the browser to allow the courses to run as they use this programming language.
The system also require all pop up blockers to be switched off, this include those in the Google or Yahoo tool bars. The courses also require flash player 9 or above.
