When the EC published a green paper consultation on audit policy in October 2010, it set out to achieve a comprehensive, forward-looking debate where ‘no subject should be taboo’. The debate poses numerous challenges, but also presents opportunities with regard to the evolution of audit in the EU to serve the economy in the next generation. The many ideas put forward by the EC and stakeholders in responses to the consultation will be discussed at a major conference in Brussels on 10 February.

The FSA is determined to improve the protection accorded to client money and assets at some financial services firms. Its recently established client assets unit is working with financial services firms and auditors to change how client assets are handled, and you can expect to see more enforcement activity in this area in the coming months.

The Forum met in March 2011 and, along with a progress report on the EC Green Paper on Audit Policy: Lessons from the Crisis and the FRC consultation on effective company stewardship, it discussed two issues: progress on the project on What makes financial statements reliable? and the forward agenda on sharing experience to inform policy making.

The faculty’s forthcoming autumn roadshow is intended to help auditors continue up the learning curve on the new clarity ISAs. Taking advantage of the unique position of the faculty, the roadshow will use feedback from the QAD, ICAEW technical enquiry service, cold file reviewers and practitioners on the difficult areas in clarity ISAs to help answer the most important and common questions.

The Department of Business, Innovation and Skills announced that the government will amend the Companies Act to bring small company audit rules in line with the EU minimum in 2012 and to relax the audit and accounting rules for medium-sized businesses and subsidiaries.

Revised APB guidance on the audit of charities in the UK

Practice note (PN) 11 published in March 2011, supersedes previous guidance issued by the APB in December 2008. It takes account of significant regulatory and other developments affecting charities since that date.
