ACA training programme

The ACA training programme is designed to equip you with the skills you'll need to become a successful, professional business adviser.

How long does ACA training take?

Alex Law

Your training will last a minimum of 3 years but can extend to 5 years, depending on your chosen entry route to the ACA and your employer's preferences for training.

The training contract requires you to complete a minimum of 450 days technical work experience and both stages of the Institute exams (the Professional Stage and Advanced Stage). This cannot be completed in a shorter period of time.

Training locations

The ICAEW has over 2,000 authorised training offices around the world, 100 of which are located outside of the UK in the following countries:

What is a training contract?

The training contract is a written agreement between you and your employer acknowledging your commitment to the ACA training process.

Technical work experience

The ICAEW training contract requires that you receive practical on-the-job training alongside your preparation for the exams. You are required to complete a minimum of 450 days of technical work experience which is usually gained during your day-to-day working life.

Initial professional development (IPD)

IPD is designed to help ACA trainees integrate exam studies, work experience and the development of professional skills in the five key areas that define chartered accountants.

Structured Training in Ethics (STE)

You will be challenged on issues relating to professional ethics. Drawing on the ICAEW’s latest thinking on ethics, you will tackle questions on confidentiality, integrity, objectivity and independence.

Training support

The ICAEW offers four methods of support during your training programme: mentor, support materials, student societies and Client Services. You can contact the Client Services Helpline on +44 (0)1908 248 040 for any queries relating to the ACA as you look for a training contract and throughout your training period.
