Careers advisers

Whether you work with school students, university students or are one of our SCAN members (Student Careers Advisors Network), the ICAEW offers support and advice to you to help your students prepare for the ACA.

The ICAEW assists careers advisors and students by:

  • providing up-to-date information on our website
  • running a helpline and email enquiry service for students and careers advisers
  • Supplying literature and promotional items for distribution
  • providing ICAEW representatives, or local ACA trainee/qualified chartered accountants, for careers talks and presentations
  • attending careers fairs
  • running a skills session designed to give students a taste of what chartered accountancy is about, whilst developing their employability, communication, time management and business skills

School careers advisers

Most organisations are looking at attracting the top calibre students whether they be graduates or high achieving school leavers.

To gain a place at many training organisations, school leavers require a minimum UCAS tariff score of 280. Students do not need to have an A-level in Maths to be become an ACA, but an A or B at GCSE in both Maths and English.

Students can also progress to the ACA after completing the Association of Accounting Technicians qualifications (AAT) via the AAT-ACA Fast Track route, which gives credit for AAT modules completed.

University careers advisers

We work closely with universities across the UK and internationally and offer support to help inform students about their career options following a career as an ACA qualified chartered accountant. There are more than 5,000 ACA training opportunities available to students annually in the UK and internationally.

It doesn't matter what degree discipline a student is following, but ICAEW authorised training employers offering the ACA prefer graduates with a first or 2:1. Good A-level results combined with good all round business awareness and skills such as numeracy, communication and presentation skills are also important.

Student Careers Advisers Network (SCAN)

Our members are vital to us in helping to raise awareness of chartered accountancy careers and the ACA qualification. Annually, across the country, we attend events at schools, colleges and universities undertaking a variety of opportunities including exhibiting at careers fairs, giving presentations and facilitating business skills sessions. The SCAN programme relies on members volunteering their time and help.
