Success comes from sharing skills
Consultant John Christie from Longhope, Gloucestershire has been awarded the Young Enterprise South West Business Adviser of the Year Award, which is supported by the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW).
John was nominated by students at King’s School, Gloucester for his work with their Young Enterprise project to produce a celebrity cook book. Stars such as Stephen Fry, Jane Asher and Jamie Oliver contributed to the book.
George Lifely (17), managing director of the students’ company, Thing’s@King’s, commented:
“John did not just tell us to aim high; he pushed us forward to reach our full potential. John would never let us settle with the basics, he would try to make us be the best we could.”
John Christie has been a Young Enterprise business adviser for five years, working with schools across the county.
“Acting as a Young Enterprise business adviser is extremely rewarding and brings with it many benefits both for the advisers and the schools they assist,” he said. “Students benefit from the business experience of the advisers and we learn more about young people and education today. I am thrilled to have received this award.”

Richard Cole, chairman of Gloucestershire Young Enterprise and director of Young Enterprise South West, said: “This is a great honour for John Christie and to be chosen as the best from over 350 business advisers in the South West is fantastic. This is the fourth year in a row that Business Adviser of the Year has come from Gloucestershire and is a testament to the quality of the business people in the county who volunteer to help Young Enterprise each year.
“The South West regional final was a great success for Gloucestershire. In addition to John being named Adviser of the Year, Patrick Bradley from the Milestone School was awarded Team Programme Achiever of the Year and Viva, our county champions from Balcarras School, not only won the Best Use of New Media and Barclays Best Financial Management categories but were awarded second place overall in the AXA regional competition – a magnificent achievement.”
“Next year we anticipate up to 50 teams participating in Gloucestershire and will need to recruit more advisers to meet this unprecedented demand. Anyone who feels their skills would benefit Young Enterprise and would like to volunteer as an adviser should contact Rachel Goodwin, Young Enterprise county manager on 0770 3058541 or contact the regional office on 01452 309109.”
