Aligning with members careers (2 of 3)

Harry McAdoo, Director, Communications

‘With Accountancy magazine, the intention is to provide members with a high quality journal which enables them to remain well informed about the profession and its role within the wider business world. Accountancy has retained its editorial independence which means that it also serves as a spotlight into the Institute, ensuring we remain accountable to members.’

An all-member monthly journal as part of the existing subscription

In 2005 we made a commitment to provide Accountancy magazine as a core part of the subscription to all members and students. In 2006 we delivered on this commitment making Accountancy the largest, high quality accounting journal in the world with a circulation in excess of 149,000.

A new faculty for the financial services sector

On the back of extensive member consultation, we launched the new Financial Services Faculty on 1 January 2007 to provide targeted support to professionals across the financial services sector. It focuses upon the key disciplines of auditing and reporting, regulation, risk, capital management, financial planning and advice. Iain Coke, Head of the Financial Services Faculty explains:

‘All of these are areas where financial services professionals are faced with industry-specific challenges and require specialist knowledge and technical support.’

Jonathan Bloomer, Managing Director of Cerberus UK Advisers LLP, is chair of the faculty’s advisory group, while John Tiner, Chief Executive of the Financial Services Authority and John McFall, MP Chairman of the Treasury Select Committee, have both agreed to join as advisory group members.

Energised regions and districts

Our ‘broad church’ is also defined by our geographic spread. Charles Carter, Director, Regions reports:

‘During 2006 we increased our commitment to engaging with members across all of our operating regions. In total, over 100,000 people attended our events through the year – a phenomenal demonstration of interest and involvement, which says as much about our members as it does about our programme and the ICAEW itself. The fact that 960 of our 2,350 events were CPD-linked is also a strong signal of the desire of our members to maintain the very high standards expected of their profession.’

As well as running courses and events, the regions and district societies provide an important interface with the grassroots of the membership and a conduit through which the Institute is able to take soundings on business issues. The regional strategy boards, established to provide focus to regional representation, also play a significant role in helping shape our thinking on national policy issues such as regulation and enterprise.
