Aligning with members careers (1 of 3)

‘As a professional body we must be responsive to market need. That means being able to provide members with the kinds of tailored learning and professional development experiences which will enable them to maintain the competitive edge they gained on qualification.’

Raymond Madden
Executive Director,
Learning & Professional Development

Making an early start

Thinking about a career can start long before employment. In 2006 we increased our reach with school and college leavers, encouraging them to think about the opportunities available to them through the ACA. We also extended our programme and resources for young professionals, helping us reinforce our relevance to members at the beginning of their careers. Sharron Gunn, Director, Member Services, regards this as key to establishing and building long term alliances:

‘The period immediately after qualification is exciting and intense for members – they have done the hard work and achieved a standard that is recognised around the world, and they have lots of options open to them. It is important that we offer them help, guidance and access to the resources they need to make the best decisions.’

An academy of qualifications

In recent years we have been developing a range of qualifications that build on the reputation and standing of the ACA. In 2006, we have continued to market our corporate finance qualification – the only one of its kind – with the major investment houses, and had received over 700 applications by the end of December 2006. We have established joint ventures with respected academic partners such as the Cass Business School with whom we run the diploma in charity accounting and the Oxford University Business School with whom we run the Diploma in Financial Strategy. We will continue to develop this suite of career related qualifications to enable finance professionals to gain the skills and expertise they need in whatever field they choose to specialise.
