Increasing our international footprint (2 of 3)

Launch of the Global Accounting Alliance

The Global Accounting Alliance (GAA) represents an important step for leading accounting bodies working across developed capital markets. The Institute was instrumental in the establishment of the GAA which creates a global community of 700,000 accountants, bringing together finance professionals with shared interests and expectations who can now benefit from reciprocal representation and support. In November an event was hosted at the Institute to welcome over 200 GAA members working in the UK.

Hong Kong – continued growth

Our relationship with the Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants (HKICPA) has helped us extend our foothold in the region including holding a successful conference in May 2006 looking at the challenges facing Chinese companies considering overseas listings. We have also continued to grow our membership in Hong Kong, working closely with the HKICPA, and now have over 700 new members working in the region.

City groups

Building on the success of the groups in Kuala Lumpur and Sydney, in March 2006 we established a new city group in Singapore. These groups are an important aspect of our international work providing strong, practical links with the Institute for members overseas as well as helping promote our work in new territories.

World Bank – helping to promote best practice in Bangladesh

During 2006 we began to work through detailed proposals to help support the Bangladeshi business and financial infrastructure in conjunction with the World Bank. The project represents an opportunity for us to work with a national government on developing policies and practices to support the local economy. Again, a core part of this programme – one that is critical to the way we are developing all of our international interests – is our co-operation with the national body. The project involves working closely with our fellow institute in Bangladesh to develop models of best practice based on our own experience.
