Social mobility

We work in the public interest and promote social mobility in the profession and beyond.

Milton Keynes Community Foundation

ICAEW Foundation, our charity, provides financial support in the form of bursaries to students from financially disadvantaged backgrounds to study accountancy and finance at universities across the UK. It also provides bursaries to students of new professional accountancy qualifications (PAQ) in growing economies like Malawi, Ghana, Cambodia and Lesotho. Bursary students in the UK can also avail of a bespoke mentoring programme to support their wellbeing during their studies and to assist in their career planning. In Malawi, the Foundation has funded a blended assisted learning programme to assist a number of students towards passing their PAQ exams.

ICAEW is connected to the Community Foundation through its Milton Keynes team. The Milton Keynes Community Foundation (MKCF) is a registered and quality assured charity, and is one of the largest foundations in the network. With 31 years of experience, strong governance and with a diverse and knowledgeable team, MKCF is flexible in the way they work; understanding and meeting the needs of their funders and grant recipients.

As part of our work together, the ICAEW Social Mobility Fund has recently been launched. The £100,000 fund objective is to support projects which improve social mobility in the black communities; providing support and inspiration to those with aspiration and ability but are disadvantaged.

Initiatives will include life skills development, an understanding of the opportunities afforded by further education including professional qualifications such as those provided by ICAEW and, crucially, peer group learning, feedback and inspiration to the following generations. The funding will also be used to support stepping-stone projects that will work towards building confidence and raising aspirations.

Could you be a mentor?

We’re looking for ICAEW members, with a similar background to the individuals being supported, to volunteer as mentors as part of the programme. If you are interested in getting involved, please email matthew.downton@icaew.com.
