Digesting the annual dinner

Our 2018 annual dinner was held in the iconic City Hall, Cardiff to an audience of 480 business professionals based in South Wales. To date, the South Wales dinner is the best attended ICAEW dinner anywhere in the UK, including London – so thank you to those members who attended, took tables and engaged with our annual event.

Guests were treated to a champagne reception on arrival followed by a sumptuous 3 course dinner. You can see all the images – the glamour and the black tie glitz – from the evening through our Flickr account.

Your president, Harri Lloyd Davies, gave a warm welcome to members and guests in his opening speech, which was followed by a thought provoking talk from the Rt Hon Alun Cairns MP, Secretary of State for Wales. The Secretary of State spoke warmly about his working relationship with Harri, and how he admired our president’s commitment to his profession and his community. There was also a chuckle in the audience, when SoS declared “I am not an accountant – and I almost said thankfully”! The Secretary of State received an enthusiastic applause when referring to the abolishment of the Severn Bridge Tolls from mid-December 2018.

Lord Digby Jones concluded our 2018 dinner with his after dinner speech and it appeared that guests were still debating his commentary long after he’d left the stage. Never let it be said that an accountants’ dinner is dull as the rhetoric was raging around some tables!

The 2019 annual dinner will be held at Cardiff’s City Hall on Thursday 17 October and hosted by the incoming president, Anne Smith, partner at Watts Gregory. Anne plans to shake up the format a little by repositioning the staging area to bring the whole audience closer to the main stage and has suggested reducing the number of dinner speakers to allow for more networking and entertainment of table guests. We are already liking her style.

Anne’s planning a very big name as her after dinner speaker and is in negotiations with “their office” at present. Watch this space!
