Spotlight: Nicola Whiting

‘I’ve not taken the usual route into accountancy but certainly don’t regret my choices! What I like about audit is the variety, as most weeks I’m at a different business and working with different people.’

Nicola completed a degree in music at the University of Manchester as a performance scholar, before moving to Cape Town to set up and run a bar. Nicola comments how such choices have helped to shape her career, ‘I feel my experiences prior to accountancy have really benefitted me in being able to adapt to different working environments and personalities, as well as understanding business challenges and issues.’

Following four years working abroad, Nicola moved back to her hometown, Nottingham, to begin studying towards the ACA qualification. After qualifying at Smith Cooper, with 15 first-time passes, and experience in audit and corporate finance, Nicola joined Cooper Parry’s Skyview office, where she currently works as an Audit Assistant Manager.

Alongside her role at Cooper Parry, Nicola is Chairperson of the Nottingham Professional Services (NPS) Futures committee. NPS is an independent voice for Nottingham’s professional sector with an objective to invigorate business activity through better networking across all levels, including a range of events with updates on the city’s developments, CPD events, and social events.

Nicola comments, ‘It’s really important to me that I have a good work-life balance and get involved in activities outside of my day-to-day job. I play regularly with the Nottingham Symphonic Wind Orchestra as Principal Flute, and have held various professional committee roles since starting my career in accountancy, including Vice-President of the Nottingham Chartered Accountant Students’ Society in 2018. Cooper Parry has a strong emphasis on culture and employee-wellbeing, which largely means I can work flexibly in order to do the activities I love outside of work.’
