Some of the UK’s best tax speakers lined-up for Practical Tax Conference

With the booking deadlines for this year’s Practical Tax Conference now just weeks away, Jane Walker looks at why the event delivers essential CPD for independent tax practitioners and their teams.

Some of the UK’s leading tax experts are heading to North Berwick this October to speak at this year’s Practical Tax Conference; among their ranks are award-winning writers, key figures from the ICAEW Tax Faculty, and some of the most in-demand tax speakers in the UK.

Anyone involved in tax – or accountancy in general – is likely to be familiar with many of those involved, so the chance to spend up to two days hearing them explore topical tax issues is one not to be missed.

ICAEW Tax Faculty experts

We’re delighted that ICAEW Past-President and former Chair of the ICAEW Tax Faculty, Paul Aplin be joining us again this year. Paul’s session with (then) CIOT President, Ray McCann, was – for many delegates – one of the highlights of last year’s Conference. Paul will once again be looking at how ICAEW and CIOT work together and their relationship with HMRC.

Award-winning tax lecturer, popular tax writer, former Chair of the ICAEW Tax Faculty and chartered accountant in practice, Rebecca Benneyworth, will be discussing developments in the taxation of intellectual property on the first day of the conference, and bringing the event to a close on day two with a small business tax update session.

Key tax topics

Another former Chair of the ICAEW Tax Faculty, tax author Carl Bayley will deliver sessions on Scottish taxes and property tax; whilst Vice Chair of the ICAEW Taxes and National Insurance Committee, Kate Upcraft will be sharing essential insights into the latest issues impacting on employment tax.

Newly elected CIOT Deputy President, Chair of the ICAEW Tax Faculty’s Technical Committee and three time Tax Writer of the Year, Peter Rainey will help delegates get to grips with – among other things – business disposal and entrepreneurs’’ relief.

New faces

Joining the regular speakers – all back due to popular demand – are two new experts. VAT expert Veronica Donnelly – who has long been on our wish list of speakers for the event – makes her Practical Tax Conference debut with a timely session on Brexit, customs and VAT. As this year’s Conference takes place just four weeks before the UK is potentially due to leave the EU, Veronica’s talk offers delegates a great chance to get-up-to-speed on what 31 October is likely to mean for business.

Senior Tax Specialist with Catax and popular tax writer Nigel Holmes will also be speaking at the event for the first time, with a session on Capital Allowances.

Key booking deadlines:

Note that residential bookings for this year’s Conference close on 15 August – please be aware that after this date, the hotel cannot guarantee that any accommodation will be available.

Day-delegate/non-residential places can be booked until 20 September.
