ICAEW comment on measures announced by Chancellor

Thursday 5 November 2020: Responding to the new measures announced by Chancellor Rishi Sunak today, Michael Izza, ICAEW Chief Executive, said:

“The revival of the furlough scheme at its original level and its extension through to March is a major intervention. Taken together with the continued support for the self-employed announced in recent days, this is an effective and generous package - although some significant gaps in coverage remain. However, it will protect millions of jobs throughout the UK and help many companies get through the winter.”

“We also ask ministers to show equal determination in addressing the other threat now draining business confidence – the risk of a disorderly end to the EU transition period in January. We urge government to redouble its efforts to secure a fair deal which will help to stimulate and sustain the UK's post-COVID economic recovery."
