Golf day goes global

96 golfers took part in the ICAEW South Wales Annual Charity Golf Competition on Wednesday 14 September at Radyr Golf Club, Cardiff.

If complaining about the blistering sunshine and oppressive heat on a golf course is considered “fair play” then that was the drama at the South Wales annual golf competition. We enjoyed 18 holes of golf on perhaps the hottest day in September as the temperature reached 28°C on the course!

All participants basked in a rare dose of late summer sunshine which lifted spirits and resulted in the most perfect golfing conditions. In fact, a bottle of factor 50 sun screen was found at the bottom of my handbag and was handed out at the half-way house (also known as the beer tent). It’s true that many golfers arrived at the beer tent asking to swap their complimentary bottle of beer for a chilled glass of water!

24 teams from local businesses helped to make the day a huge, sell-out success. A special thank you must be extended to our event sponsors Santander Corporate and Commercial and UK Steel Enterprise Limited for their support and enthusiasm for the day.

Equally, our thanks go to Stratstone Jaguar Cardiff who provided the on-course prizes: “nearest the pin” and “longest drive”. Everyone agreed the latest Jaguar cars showcased on the practice greens looked amazing!

The competition winners

Scoring was managed using innovative mobile phone technology supplied and co-ordinated by Clarion Golf, so there was no need for a pencil or score card!

The winner of the ICAEW Members’ Trophy was Neil Rummings of PwC in Cardiff, whose name is a familiar one on the ICAEW Member’s Trophy – so well done again, Neil!

The winning team came from leading global company CABOT Corporation, who entered two teams, inviting players from as far as the USA! Team one was captained by chartered accountant and CABOT’s finance director Richard O’Brien. Richard led a convincing victory alongside his international work colleagues and team mates!

Many congratulations to the team.
