Ali Qasim chosen as ICAEW's Chartered Star and OYW Ambassador

Thursday 31 May 2018, ICAEW has chosen this year’s Chartered Star to be ICAEW and CAW’s One Young World (OYW) Ambassador at the OYW Summit in The Hague in October. Ali Qasim, the Chartered Star winner, will fly the flag for young chartered accountants and have the chance to network, debate, make long-lasting connections and discuss innovative solutions for solving some of the world’s issues.

Entrants to the competition had to produce an article, video or infographic outlining how the chartered accountancy profession can demonstrate trust and leadership in business and finance using the #CharteredStar hashtag.

Ali Qasim, who currently works at Rothschild & Co in Global Advisory, was born in Peshawar, Pakistan, and raised in Manchester, UK. Instead of going to university, Ali decided to join PwC at the age of 17 on their Higher Apprenticeship programme in Tax Advisory. Upon completion of his tax qualification, Ali became the youngest member ever of the Association of Taxation Technicians, and obtained the Frank Collingwood award for achieving the best exam mark nationally in the Business Compliance exam (May 2015).

Ali also received PwC’s best Higher Apprentice award, the Ethel Watts prize for achieving the best exam mark globally in the Audit and Assurance exam (March 2016), and an award from the Overseas Pakistani Foundation recognising his international success at such a young age.

One Young World is a UK-based charity which gathers together the brightest young leaders from around the world, empowering them to make lasting connections to create positive change.

Ali said:

“I feel honoured and humbled to have been selected as the ICAEW and CAW ambassador for the One Young World Summit in The Hague later this year, it is a unique and perspective changing opportunity. I am excited by the prospect of leveraging this global platform to collaborate with other like-minded young leaders in making our world a better place.”

Fiona Wilkinson, ICAEW Vice President and Chartered Star Judge, said:

“We received many excellent candidates this year, so congratulations to Ali for having won against such competition. Ali gave an excellent presentation which impressed the judges, he is a deserving winner and an excellent role model for young chartered accountants.”
