Friday 29 June 2018, Talented students from Sir Thomas Rich’s School have demonstrated excellent accountancy skills showing they have what it takes to be the next generation of business leaders and were crowned national champions of ICAEW’s business and accounting competition, BASE.
As an initiative to provide school and college students with a taste of what it’s really like to work as an ICAEW Chartered Accountant, BASE has grown in size year-on-year, with more than 4,000 students taking part in 2018. BASE aims to give students insight into working in business and the key role chartered accountants play in helping organisations grow and prosper. The students were set a fictitious challenge and asked to advise a technology start-up company, using key employability skills to develop business recommendations and deliver these to their board of directors, just like real chartered accountants.
The BASE final concludes a series of online challenges involving around 500 teams from schools and FE colleges across the UK. The panel of judges included business professionals from Depop, Fujitsu and Virgin Media.
Sharon Spice, ICAEW Director of Global Student Recruitment, said:
“All of the students in the final showed excellent business skills at such a young age, however, students from Sir Thomas Rich’s School really shone through for their impressive ideas and initiative. They stood out among a very talented group of students and I’m sure they all have bright futures ahead of them. This challenge is especially difficult, because our judges are not only looking for academic ability, but also skills required in all workplaces. All students in the final proved they were able to communicate, solve problems and demonstrate resilience when under pressure. BASE is a fantastic opportunity to introduce students to the skills they will require when they start their careers.”
Zoe Wong, Depop Finance and Operations Director, said:
“I was incredibly impressed with the array of presentations given today and all students showed themselves to be intelligent individuals with bright futures ahead of them. BASE has given students the opportunity to experience the fast paced and exciting day-to-day work of a chartered accountant. Qualifying as an ICAEW Chartered Accountant has given me so many opportunities, and this competition is a fantastic opportunity for students to get first-hand experience of what it can offer.
“It has been an honour to be a judge at BASE, and I have been inspired by all the students who took part. It is important that students learn about the skills required for working life as early as possible, and BASE offers just that. I have no doubt that all these students will go on to have prosperous careers whichever profession they should choose.”
Students also had the opportunity to meet with a number of employers including: BDO, EY, KPMG, The National Audit Office, PwC, RSM, Saffery Champness, Smith & Williamson
The BASE final took place at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole Hotel on 28 June.
