Suresh Hariharan was group financial controller at Interconnector UK in 2014 when ICAEW awarded him a prize for being the best student of the Diploma in Corporate Finance. Three years on, he explains how the diploma helped him to move to the next stage of his career.

Why did you take the diploma?

The role at Interconnector saw me manage corporate finance projects – that was the main reason for taking the diploma. It made sense for me to get the theoretical knowledge to go with the practical experience of working on such projects. I am a member of ICAEW, and at the time I was looking for something that would enhance my own skills and knowledge from a corporate finance perspective, while also benefiting my employer. I put together a business case explaining why the company should support me through the diploma, and submitted this to HR with the support of my FD. It highlighted the level of investment required in terms of time and money, and the benefits for Interconnector, given that no one at the company had those skills.
