The many hats of the Finance Director
Finance Directors' Conference 2013
This year’s conference is now over. Thank you to everyone who joined us at Chartered Accountants' Hall on 16 May 2012. We look forward to seeing you again for next year's event, on 23 May 2013.
The many hats of the FD
The role of the finance director has always been multi-faceted. But today's finance function is much more integrated with the business. Its leadership requires so much more than financial expertise and discipline, that properly exploring the different aspects of the role should be high on any FD's to-do list.
At a time when financial rigour is so critical to business, it would be easy to neglect these other crucial aspects of the role. So sharing ideas, learning from other finance leaders and hearing about smarter approaches to different parts of the job is a great opportunity. Above all, this is a chance to network with your peers, chat to fellow delegates, contribute to the sessions and add your voice to a debate that can make us all better FDs. The conference also provides the opportunity to engage with our event partners and exhibitors.

About the conference
In the first of a three-part editorial series in our Finance & Management Faculty magazine, Richard Young interviewed finance directors about two of the many key facets of the FD role - how FDs should be good co-pilots (sitting alongside the CEO) and storytellers (turning the numbers into narrative).
In his second article Richard explored the next three ‘hats’ FDs must wear, and discovered how a mastery of processes and systems, being a business arbiter and acting as trusted counsel are also crucial to the FD role.
Richard Young finishes the seven hats series with perhaps the most dramatic roles – rescue service and muse.
