The UK’s second city is not, as my straw poll of born-and-bred-Londoners suggested, Manchester.
One out of the seven ‘interviewees’ got it right – Birmingham. Perhaps the recent dominance of one or two of Manchester’s football clubs have helped to elevate the perception of that city. The establishment of MediaCityUK in Salford has also no doubt boosted Manchester’s profile too.
Maybe it’s the fact that the West Midlands, once the manufacturing hub of the UK, has been through a challenging three decades and has yet to confidently reinvent itself in the way its north-west rival has.
