With worker representation on Plc boards in the UK being mooted, Jon Moulton looks at the pros and cons of having employees in the boardroom.
Brexit was always going to be unpredictable, but one consequence of the leave vote that no one prophesied was that an unexpected prime minister would announce: “We’re going to have not just consumers represented on company boards, but workers as well.”
So, out of Europe, but adopting a European habit at the same time. The idea seems to be limited to big companies, but we shall see. As regards consumers, having them on the board of train companies, utilities and the like seems attractive. Outside of that, the sense of sticking consumers onto boards seems much less obvious, indeed even daft.
