UK chocolate exports continue to grow in 2017: Q3 export figures and global confectionery trends

Latest trade data shows an international appetite for British chocolate, with an increase in export value and overall growth in the food and drink sector. We identify the top export destinations, key growth markets, global competitors and challenges for UK exporters.

Export figures released by HMRC this month show that, despite uncertainties over Brexit, the EU is still the top destination for British chocolate and cocoa confectionery exports. Over 70% of chocolate produced in the UK was shipped to countries within the EU between July and September 2017. Over the whole year to date, chocolate exports have grown 6.6% in value and now stands as the UK’s number three food and drink export behind whisky and salmon.

Ireland remains the UK’s top export destination for all food and drink products and it makes up nearly 32% of the total global export value in Q3 2017 for chocolate.
