Supporting the Bulgarian accounting profession

ICAEW examiner David Brookfield has been supporting the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Bulgaria (IDES) and the University of National and World Economy (UNWE) in the development of a joint accreditation programme.

The ongoing project has already resulted in undergraduate students from UNWE becoming eligible for six credits (Accounting; Assurance; Management Information; Business, Technology and Finance; Principles of Taxation and Law) for the ACA and allowing them to proceed to the final IDES written examinations for the Bulgarian CPA qualification. The project has also led to the creation of a new Master's programme. The programme has been strategically aligned with the ACA enabling students to apply for a further credit (Business Strategy and Technology) giving them a significant head start to the ACA.

David is now collaborating with IDES in the development of a new professional assessment format. David’s work will change the current IDES exams (which consist of 12 multiple choice exams) so that they are more transparent and relevant to employer’s needs. It is hoped that these changes will lead to an increase in pass rates.
