I’m responsible for reviewing monthly and quarterly results as well as the development, production and provision of monthly financial management information. The three things I found most appealing about the NFL programme were; being assigned a mentor, expanding my professional network and the workshop subjects, which had been highlighted as personal development areas.

NFL has really got me focused on self-development. Each workshop squeezes in a wealth of knowledge, guidance, and ideas, which have changed the way I plan my development, and workload. In the past I had an idea of where I wanted to be, but hadn’t figured how I would get there.

NFL includes peer learning groups where you can discuss leadership issues in confidence, and tap into the experiences of your peers. It also includes an assigned mentor who I meet regularly for advice and guidance. The greatest change has been my approach to communicating key messages. I recently presented to our European business heads and thanks to the High Impact Communication workshop the business now has a better awareness of how performance is reflected in the financials.

My role at Alliance Trust was internal auditor but during the NFL programme I was promoted to financial controller. I now have responsibility for eight members of staff and a group of companies with income of £100m. NFL appealed to me as it presented an opportunity to reflect on business related issues and learn from my peers in a confidential environment.

For me the greatest benefit has been the personal mentoring. My mentor's insight and experience have been instrumental in helping me achieve the role of FC. A key benefit for the business is helping me think more strategically and commercially and in developing my emotional intelligence. NFL enables finance professionals to develop their leadership and communication skills rather than focusing solely on their technical accounting knowledge.

I manage a team of nine accountants and am responsible for the month end, forecasting and budgeting process, and management and group reporting for five regions. NFL’s blend of workshops, peer learning groups and mentoring appealed to me; as well as building up a network of peers for career support and advice.

The course coincided with a restructure at work and I have used my mentor to discuss how I lead and manage a larger team with inherent difficulties. My mentor has also pushed me to think selfishly about my career and what I want to achieve long term.

The Leadership Essentials workshop allowed me to step back and evaluate my leadership style and gave me simple tools to help me become a better leader with the business and my direct reports.
