International consumer price indices
The Library & Information Service is often asked for international CPI figures to contrast with the UK's. Below is a selection of international resources which you may find helpful.
The EC's Eurostat portal has a handy map summarising data from Harmonised Indices of Consumer Prices (HICP). It provides comparative tables for HICP statistics under 12 different headings for EC member countries.
International Monetary Fund
The IMF's Dissemination Standards Bulletin Board links to national statistics (including consumer price indices) of countries subscribing to its Special Data Dissemination Standard.
The Australian Bureau of statistics has quarterly Consumer Price Index figures dating back to 1960, with Interim Retail Price Index figures from 1952-1960. The most recent quarter is available by clicking the summary tab
Statistics Belgium publishes the Consumer Price Index for the current year and maintains a free spreadsheet of the CPI from 1920 onwards. It also publishes a separate graph of inflation with statistics for different products and services.
The National Bureau of statistics of China publishes monthly Consumer Price Index figures
The Institut National de la Statistique et des Etudes Economiques (INSEE) publishes monthly updates to France's Consumer Price Index. Historical data for a variety of products can be downloaded for the period from 1998 onwards.
Germany's Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) has a page for Consumer Price Indices with links to methodology, price changes by sector and a personal inflation calculator.
Republic of Ireland
The Central Statistics Office publishes the Consumer Price Index by month and and commodity group from 2002 onwards. Annual average figures are available from 1996 and the annual average change from 1977.
The Japanese Statistics Bureau has a section for the Consumer Price Index with the latest monthly results and annual average figures. Historical commodity prices are available from 1971 onwards. The Bureau also provides a guide to its methodology and the re-tabulation of statistics from 2010.
Statistics Sweden publishes a large and detailed range of Consumer Price Index information from 1830 to the present. It includes Harmonised Index of Consumer Price (HICP) data and Net Price Index (NPI) data.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes numerous tables of Consumer Price Index data with various geographical breakdowns. Their CPI home page explains the data sources, the total coverage and the practical uses of the statistics.
