As with any disintegrating marriage, the UK’s split from the EU has stumbled through phases of increasing unhappiness. Many couples tolerate their partner’s annoying habits for a while, before irritation starts to take over, exasperation grows and requests to compromise result in arguments. Tensions escalate until one side decides there is only one option – to dramatically walk out, shocking their spouse and mutual friends by demanding to be free of an unequal union and the shackles of a partner who has too much control.
