Almost every day since the prime minister, Boris Johnson, told the UK to stay home, journalists at Downing Street’s daily press conferences have bombarded politicians, medics and scientists with a question they can’t answer: when is all this going to end?
At first it was frustrating to see the fourth estate regularly throwing away opportunities to hold the government to account and instead repeat the same pointless questions. Even when Johnson’s stand-in Dominic Raab announced the lockdown extension the next day’s newspapers groaned “three more weeks!” as if it were a shock.
