How climate affects accountants

Climate change is now higher up on the political agenda, but what does this mean for accountants and businesses? Rachel Underhill explains.

The urgent need to address the negative impact of climate change is now higher up on the political agenda than it was during the 2008 financial crash. Countries such as Norway have pledged to become carbon neutral by 2030. This target is more ambitious than current UK policy, which is to reduce carbon emissions by at least 80% compared to 1990 levels by 2050. As part of these ambitions, many areas are decarbonising their heat and transport networks, as well as building zero-carbon homes.

Transport is certainly an area where action is needed. As a result of initiatives in other areas, transport is now the single biggest emitter of greenhouse gases in the UK.
