Sci-Tech is hosting this year’s summit at its laboratory in Daresbury, near Warrington

ICAEW head of corporate finance David Petrie will chair a panel session at the Liverpool City Region Innovation Investment Summit for Scaling. The theme of the whole-day event on 21 May will be the challenges of funding for scale-up and high-tech businesses.

The Summit is now in its fourth year and is delivered in partnership by LYVA Labs, the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority and Innovate UK. This year, it will be hosted by Sci-Tech at its laboratory in Daresbury, near Warrington, and attendees will have the opportunity to tour the science campus. 

The other speakers include:

  • Marc D’Abbadie, head of venture and executive director River Capital; 
  • Marion Bernard, chief investment officer, Northern Gritstone;
  • Louise Chapman, investment director, Praetura Ventures;
  • Dr Susanne Coles, director, Innovate UK Loans, and deputy director, Innovation Finance Ecosystem; and
  • Steve Stuart, chair, LYVA Labs.

Faculty AGM

Corporate Finance Faculty’s Annual General Meeting, held at Chartered Accountants’ Hall ICAEW

The Corporate Finance Faculty’s Annual General Meeting will be held at Chartered Accountants’ Hall on Thursday 22 May 2025. It will include a review of the faculty’s work for its members and ICAEW over the past year. ICAEW’s head of corporate finance, David Petrie, will also outline the faculty’s plans for 2025 and 2026. 

Always a popular event in the faculty’s calendar, the AGM also provides an opportunity for members to network and meet the faculty board, its technical committee and staff. A buffet lunch and networking in the Members’ Club will begin at 12:15, followed by the AGM in the Members’ Room at approximately 13:00. Members can book a free place here.

  • The faculty’s latest commercial due diligence guideline, co-authored by KPMG and Luminii, will be launched on 10 September at Chartered Accountants’ Hall.
  • The faculty’s Annual Reception will be held at Goldsmiths’ Hall on 13 November.

HMRC has published answers to tax questions on employees trading shares on PISCES – the Private Intermittent Securities and Capital Exchange System, a new type of secondary trading platform for intermittent trading of private company shares. See here.

Markets report

UK Finance published its report A Unified Strategy for Growth and Prosperity last month. It was co-written by UK Finance and EY. ICAEW corporate finance senior manager, Katerina Joannou, arranged input from both member firms and ICAEW’s technical committee. The report focuses on UK public and private capital markets from the perspective of funding needs of UK businesses. It can be viewed here.


CONSULTATIONS

R&D tax relief

HMRC’s consultation on R&D tax relief advance clearances is “seeking views on widening the use of advance clearances in the R&D tax reliefs to reduce error and fraud, provide certainty to businesses and improve the customer experience” and runs until 26 May 2025. The faculty will respond on behalf of ICAEW. Members can email comments to corporate finance senior manager, Katerina Joannou, by 30 April.
