Tax and technology
Jane Moore, Tax Faculty technical manager, considers the move to digital in relation to tax outside of Making Tax Digital. Here she looks at the Office of Tax Simplification’s discussion paper, Technology Review, and ICAEW’s report, Digitalisation of tax.
Mention the digitalisation of tax and, at the moment, the words Making Tax Digital (MTD) will spring into most tax practitioners’ minds. But MTD is only one aspect of the move to digital, and two recent reports take a broad look at technology and how it can be used by tax authorities to manage the tax system and communicate with taxpayers.
The Office of Tax Simplification (OTS) has published a discussion paper, Technology Review: a vision for tax simplicity, which examines the implications of using technology to simplify tax. This focuses on the UK though it does look at some international examples.
