Remote auditing in 2021 and beyond

David Lyford-Smith looks at how firms have adapted to remote audit planning in the COVID-19 crisis, how technology such as portals, shared workspaces and other cloud-based systems has helped, and what it means for the future of audit.

The coronavirus pandemic really hit the UK in March 2020, resulting in a full lockdown by the end of the month. In many ways, the timing was fortuitous for the audit industry. With the busy season winding down, the sudden move to remote working was relatively manageable. But while the rollout of vaccines has now begun, the outbreak in the UK is far from over, so firms are still planning their 2021 busy seasons with remote working as the default.
