Accountancy Ancestors: Associated Accountants' Journal

Information on the obituaries, illustrations and portraits from Associated Accountants' Journal that are indexed in the Accountancy Ancestors database.

The Associated Accountants' Journal was established as the official journal of the Central Association of Accountants, a membership organisation established in 1905.

Overview

The Central Association of Accountants was founded in 1905 and regarded itself as a self-constituted body for public accountants and early publicity stressed that the membership had been formed of 'individual accession' rather than through the absorption of small district societies.

Members of the Society were known as 'Associated Accountants' and used the designations FAA (Fellow) and LAA (Licentiate). By 1909 the membership of the CAA numbered 930 members and their journal claimed the position of the third largest body of accountants in the United Kingdom at the time. (The Associated Accountants' Journal, Volume 12 (1909) pages 163-166, 170-176).

In 1933 the Central Association of Accountants was absorbed by the Institution of Certified Public Accountants, which in turn was merged with the Association of Certified and Corporate Accountants in 1941. After further changes in the twentieth century, the present day successor of this body is the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA).

Accountancy Ancestors

Coverage

1905-1927 (all issues indexed, except February 1914*)

* The collection of the ICAEW Library & Information Service does not include the February 1914 issue. However, the index for the year refers to one obituary (Dr F. W. Chisman on page 88).

Obituaries and biographical profiles index

48 obituaries are listed in the obituaries index from this journal.

The index includes all obituaries published within the journal except for one line announcements of death or references to deaths made in Council sessions. The majority of obituaries indexed are for members of the Central Association of Accountants but the listing also includes other persons of prominence in the wider accountancy profession, the legal profession, government and society.

Portaits index

34 portraits are listed in the portraits index from this journal.

The portraits index includes details of photographs of individual members published in the journal. The ICAEW Library & Information Service holds copies of all the portraits within the collection apart from one presidential portrait*

*The editorial notes from the December 1923 edition of the journal (on p339) refer to a photograph of the president but this has not been bound in the copy of the volume held at the ICAEW Library & Information Service. However, the volume for 1925 includes a photograph of the President without any editorial reference. It is possible that this is the photograph referred to in the 1923 issue, bound in the wrong volume.

Illustrations index

9 assorted illustrations are listed in the illustrations index from this journal.

A small number of non-portrait photographs were published in the journal ranging from illustrations of the CAA offices to the annual dinners held by the association. These are included in the list of general illustrations.
