Economic indicators measuring trends in consumer spending are available from a number of sources, including government and professional bodies. On this page you can access a range of reports and online resources providing quick links to statistics and commentary.

Online articles

The ICAEW Library & Information Service provides access to a range of articles in full text from leading business, finance and management journals. This resource is available to ICAEW members, ACA students and other entitled users.

Office for National Statistics
The ONS provides statistics, commentary and articles on inflation, sales, prices, the Retail Price Index (RPI) and Consumer Price Index (CPI). Search their database for the data you need. they also publish the quarterly Consumer Trends (spending on goods and services by UK households)

BRC-Nielsen Shop Price Index
Published monthly by the British Retail Consortium, tracking price changes in the retail sector.

BRC Retail sales Monitor
Monthly report of weekly sales data from retailers published by the British Retail Consortium. Three separate reports cover Retail sales - UK; Retail sales- Scotland; and Online retail sales - UK.

Scottish Widows Household Index
In this quarterly report, the Scottish Widows Household Finance Index anticipates changes in consumer behaviour by measuring how households perceive their own financial wellbeing. The report is compiled each quarter by IHS Markit, using original survey data collected by Ipsos MORI.
