BoE's Haldane warns AI threatens UK jobs

Bank of England chief economist Andy Haldane has warned that the UK needs a skills revolution to avoid “large swathes” of people becoming "technologically unemployed" as artificial intelligence makes many jobs obsolete.

Talking to the BBC, Haldane said the possible disruption of what is known as the Fourth Industrial Revolution could be "on a much greater scale" than anything felt during the First Industrial Revolution of the Victorian era.

He did, however, say some jobs will be created as a result of the new technology, with roles that focus on human interaction, face-to-face conversation and negotiation becoming more important, while simple manual jobs will be more at risk.
