Advancing thinking and debate.
What’s it all about?
The unifying theme of our work is exploring how organisations and markets are motivated to deliver sustainable outcomes and what the role of information flows is in that. We aim to be at the forefront of thinking and action in sustainability focussing on how organisations embrace it in their activities.
You can read more about this in our thought leadership prospectus: Sustainable Business brochure.
What we do
We’re looking at and thinking about many different aspects in sustainability. We focus our efforts on acting as:
- Partners in promoting sustainability;
- Enablers of collaborative systems change; and
- Pioneers in accounting for economic success.
To support these three priorities we will create, maintain and engage communities of interest and practice among ICAEW members and other stakeholders with the Sustainability Committee.

Here is a selection of other projects we have worked on:
Keywords: Building a language of systems change
This publication followed a two day gathering of the UK’s leading systems entrepreneurs in November 2014 at the Saïd Business School at the University of Oxford. Building on the work of the Finance Innovation Lab and AuditFutures the workshop was designed to help build the lexicon of systems change as a practice. Attendees included representatives from trailblazing projects like the Civic Foundry, Future of Fish, Participle and foundations like Carlouste Gulbenkien and Lankelly Chase. This publication details the words generated at the workshop and is co-published between ICAEW and the Saïd Business School at the University of Oxford.
Finance for the Future
Now in its fifth year, Finance for the Future was founded by ICAEW and The Prince’s Accounting for Sustainability Project. The programme recognises financial leadership in developing successful business models that produce financial returns and delivers environmental and social benefits.
Just Good Business
To support SME members, ICAEW developed an online resource centre for SMEs to engage in sustainability on a strategic level. The project aims to promote the positive impact of sustainability and to provide practical examples of success which inspire SME managers. The website features short video clips from a range of SMEs in the UK and has obtained funding from AAT.
Guidance for Members on Environmental Issues and UK Financial Reporting
This report published with the support of the Environment Agency is the second updated version of this report. The original report showed how the existing accounting and reporting framework, including the business review, is already capable of generating useful information about environmental performance, one of the key dimensions of sustainability.
ICAEW and the Carbon Trust Standard published ‘The Growing Business Guide to Managing Carbon’, which offers practical ways of reducing carbon emissions in your organisation.
Business Sustainability Programme:
The Business Sustainability e-learning programme (BSP) aims to raise awareness of the business case for Corporate Responsibility and the issues which face companies in becoming sustainable
