In line with ICAEW's Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Regulations, members who volunteer as charity trustees should complete training each year that is specific to those duties. To support members meet their requirements ICAEW has created this hour-long training course.
Included as part of your membership, this course aims to equip you with the knowledge and confidence to be an effective charity trustee.
The course will help you comply with the CPD Regulations and, for those charity trustees with wider CPD requirements, will count towards your minimum number of verifiable CPD hours.
ICAEW will be providing an annual update to this online training, so you can keep up to date with developments that impact your responsibilities as a charity trustee.

Overview of 2023/24 training
Recorded on 18 September 2023, this year's training is split into two sections.
The first section covers the fundamentals of being a charity trustee, including what constitutes a charity. It helps you consider what sort of organisation are you involved with and how it is regulated. The video then describes the six main duties of a charity trustee:
- to make effective decisions;
- to manage conflicts of interest/loyalty;
- to manage your charity’s resources responsibly;
- to maintain accountability;
- to identify and manage risks; and
- to report serious incidents.
The second part of the video takes a look at current and upcoming developments that might impact your role as a charity trustee, such as:
- UK GAAP for charities;
- Charities Act 2022 – a brief update on implementation;
- Fundraising and the Fundraising Regulator; and
- Highlights from the Charity Commission:
- Charity Annual Return for 2023;
- CC8: Internal financial controls;
- CC14: Investing charity money; and
- the Charity Commission's five-minute guides.
