Sustainability is high on the global agenda and businesses are in the driving seat when it comes to taking steps to change behaviour to enact sustainable outcomes.

New research from Smart Energy GB shows that although interest in achieving Net Zero in recent years has grown, 44% of Britons are unsure which actions they can take to tackle climate change. Concern for the environment, then, is yet to translate into the kinds of behavioural shifts needed to effect meaningful change.

Being part of the solution to colossal problems is a daunting proposition. Regardless, with global industry shifting to new commitments, many firms are under pressure to adapt. However, accountants can be a strategic partner for companies’ transition towards a more sustainable future.

With winter upon us, many businesses will be turning up their heating and turning on the lights. According to new research by Smart Energy GB, over 60% of small business owners are concerned about the rise in energy costs and how it will affect their ability to operate this winter.

One small step businesses can take to tackle the dual challenge of higher energy costs & sustainability goals is getting a smart meter installed which help to combat businesses climate footprint. Smart meters are the foundation of a smarter and more flexible energy system for Great Britain. They help the energy system better manage the supply and demand in order to reduce waste, whilst also being able to integrate more renewables into the system.

Smart meters enable businesses to understand how much energy they’re using, identify ways to reduce their consumption and therefore save money. They also support with cashflow forecasting, by providing visibility of the amount of energy they’re using.

There are also other areas which support sustainability in businesses including the adoption of solar panels which are essential for running on clean, renewable power. For those businesses that utilise cars and other forms of road transport, the phasing in of electric vehicles will also help in any sustainability mission.

There are a range of steps businesses can take to combat their carbon footprint, and a smart meter is a step in the right direction. It will help business owners to be more efficient with their time & money; whilst also supporting an energy system that is more sustainable in Great Britain.
