FTSE 100 multinational RELX awarded prize for M&A success

13 November 2019: RELX, the £36bn market cap global provider of information-based analytics and decision tools for professional and business customers, has been presented with ICAEW’s Corporate Development Award for its successful acquisition strategy.

The award was presented last night (TUESDAY) at ICAEW Corporate Finance Faculty’s annual reception, held at Painters’ Hall in the City of London. It recognises a London-listed company, with significant operations in the UK, whose strategy has made the most effective use of mergers and acquisitions to increase shareholder value and grow, and is based on a unique methodology devised by ICAEW and Cass Business School.

Sybella Stanley, Director of Corporate Finance, received the award on behalf of the company.

The company’s deal-making has included its £580m cash acquisition of California-based ThreatMetrix last year, one of the largest repositories of online digital identities in the world. The purchase was the largest by RELX in the past decade.

Sybella Stanley said: ““ThreatMetrix is widely recognised as a leader in the digital identity space. Bringing that together with our own strengths in physical identity attributes gives our clients across all forms of commerce and geographies a more reliable, comprehensive approach to fraud and identity risk management while maintaining the privacy and security principles our customers have come to expect. The acquisition was in line with our organic growth driven strategy, supported by acquisitions of targeted data sets and analytics that are natural additions to our existing business.”

David Petrie, ICAEW Head of Corporate Finance, said: “Every year we identify a London-listed company which has made the most effective use of M&A to increase shareholder value and grow. I’d like to congratulate RELX, a global company with 30,000 employees which was the best performer according to the unique methodology we’ve developed.”

Previous winners of this award include Weir Group, Intertek, Aberdeen Asset Management, Victoria PLC, Rentokil Initial and Coats Group.

Prizes for ICAEW’s Diploma in Corporate Finance were also awarded at the event, to Alec Stokes, private equity associate at RSM, and to Charlotte Mancuso, assistant manager at Lexington Corporate Finance.
