Biography

Matt started his professional life as a Geography Lecturer at the University of Leeds following completion of his PhD at Sheffield. In 2000 he chose to leave academia to re-train as a Chartered Accountant with Grant Thornton. Matt now leads Grant Thornton UK’s Audit Technical team, working alongside Financial Reporting, Ethics and Quality Monitoring specialists to form the firm’s National Assurance Services team. He is responsible for ensuring that his team responds to the needs of the 1,600 members of the assurance practice by delivering high quality, technically robust, and pragmatic solutions to challenges faced by audit engagement teams. His team ensures that the firm has the tools, expertise and guidance to deliver high quality audit and assurance work, which is especially challenging in the current environment with the audit profession under increasing scrutiny.

Matt continues to lead a number of client engagements, including statutory audit, client money reporting and specialist financial reporting advisory engagements.

Matt is a member of the West Yorkshire and York District Society Committee and was President 2015-17.

In what spare time he gets from professional and family life, he is the Chair of the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway, a registered charity with a turnover of £2m, which operates steam trains along the line that is famed for being the location of the 1970 ‘The Railway Children’ film.
