Special consideration FAQs

Frequently asked questions about special consideration.

All answers are accurate as of October 2021, unless otherwise stated.

What is special consideration?

Special consideration applies to circumstances where you feel that your performance in an exam has been adversely affected by illness or other circumstances.

Special consideration falls under two categories:

  • Personal circumstances
  • Issues arising from the exam environment itself

You can apply to have these factors taken into consideration during the results determination process.

How do I make a special consideration application for a Professional or Advanced Level exam?

If you wish to apply, you must submit an online application with any supporting evidence within seven days of the exam. Visit exams online and choose the exam level you have recently taken. Click ‘Apply for special consideration’ and complete the online special consideration application.

What is the deadline to apply for special consideration?

The deadline to apply for special consideration is seven days from your exam. For example, if you sit an exam on a Monday you will have until 23:59 the following Monday to submit your special consideration application.

Do I make a separate special consideration application per exam I am applying for or can all exams go on the same application?

If you wish to apply for more than one exam, you must submit an individual application for each exam and must meet the seven day deadline relating to each individual exam.

How do I modify my special consideration application?

If you wish to modify a special consideration application, go to exams online and choose the level you made the application for. Go to your existing application and click 'Additional information/documents'. Select the level of which application you are amending and this will bring up your existing application. You will be able to add the additional information in the textbox and click submit.

You will only be able to edit the application whilst the timescale is still open. Once the deadline for special consideration has passed, you are unable to edit your application.

How do I check whether my application has been successfully submitted?

You will receive an acknowledgement email once your special consideration application has been submitted. You can check the progression of your application via exams online. Go to your existing application. Select ‘add additional information’. If you can see the word ‘accepted’ under the 'status' column, this means we have received your application.

What are the potential outcomes of a special consideration application?

If your special consideration application has met the basic criteria, your application will be reviewed by the Assessment review panel.

The committee may deem an exam void appropriate if you were to fail the exam. They may decide that a mark adjustment is more appropriate for your individual circumstances.

The Assessment Committee may also decline your application completely if they deem appropriate.

We will let you know by email if you have not met the basic criteria, you will also be offered an opportunity to request a review usually within seven days.

Will I lose my pass mark if my special consideration application is accepted?

If you have applied for special consideration but have passed your exam, you will not lose your pass mark.

How long does it take to receive a response following a special consideration application?

You will receive an acknowledgement email confirming the date you will receive the initial outcome. Please allow 19-21 working days for an outcome from the day you made your special consideration application.

If you have not met the basic criteria, we will let you know by email. You will also be offered an opportunity to request a review usually within seven days.

Can I gain marks following a special consideration application?

If your special consideration application is accepted, the Assessment Committee may award a marks adjustment depending on your individual circumstances.

If I have my marks increased following a special consideration application but I have still failed, will I receive a fail mark or will the exam be a void?

The Assessment Committee will review your application and make a decision based on your individual circumstances. They may deem that a void of your exam is more suitable. If they deem a marks adjustment is more suitable, your mark may stay, irrespective of the exam mark still being a failure.

If I do not meet the basic criteria in my original application, can I request a review?

If you have not met the basic criteria, we will let you know by email. You will also be offered an opportunity to request a review usually within seven days. You should only request a review if you can show that your original application does meet the application criteria, or if you can provide further evidence.

To request a review, email specialconsideration@icaew.com. We will send you an email to confirm we have received your review request. You can submit one review request per exam, and you will be notified of the outcome on results day.
