Leadership mentoring for accountants
A recent leadership and mentoring workshop aimed specifically at accountants showed that it isn’t technical knowledge that holds people back, says LSCA Vice President Indy Agnihotri.
April 2019
The inaugural LSCA quarterly leadership mentoring event held in February was a way for our London members to receive advice from senior leaders who shared their experiences of building successful and varied careers in finance and beyond.
The mentoring workshop was aimed specifically at accountants:
- Seeking to move into their first senior leadership role.
- Wanting to gain insights into how to progress successfully in their career journey.
- Seeking advice and mentorship from experienced senior finance professionals.
The result was a group of highly experienced mentors, mentoring a group of mentees from a wide variety of finance backgrounds, all seeking advice on how to get ahead in their career and learning the secrets to leadership.
It was interesting, but not surprising, that areas such as confidence and work/life balance issues came up; it was clear it was not the hard technical skills that are preventing people getting ahead.
The success of this event means there will now be an additional programme of events during the year. These will also focus on coaching skills, another key ingredient to getting ahead in both your business and life.
Indy Agnihotri is Vice President of the London Society of Chartered Accountants.
