Get ahead with a good morning routine

CABA, the chartered accountants charity, helps Londoners start the day with five top tips to get ahead.

June 2019

The way you spend your time before you start work can set you up for success for the rest of the day.

  1. Get up early (even at weekends)

Extra time in the morning gives you space to prepare calmly for your day. If you’re not a natural morning person, train yourself to wake up earlier by setting your alarm back by just a few minutes each week. Get up at the same time every day to reinforce your new habit and improve the quality of your sleep every night.

  2. Eat breakfast

Skipping breakfast means starting the day with low blood sugar which won’t fill you with energy or enthusiasm. If you’re short on time it only takes five minutes to make porridge, bircher muesli or granola. Or opt for protein like scrambled eggs or beans on toast to keep you feeling fuller for longer.

  3. Get moving

Exercise releases feel-good hormones called endorphins, putting you in a positive state of mind for the rest of the day. According to a study by University of Bristol, regular exercise can make you more productive by boosting your concentration and your ability to solve problems

  4. Clear your head

Make time every morning, even if it’s only five minutes, for something that helps you to feel calmer and more focused before you leave for work. It could be reading, listening to music, stretching or meditating. Or even sitting quietly with your morning cup of tea.

  5. Set your goals

Make a list of your priorities for the day or review your long-term goals. By deciding what you want to do and where you want to go before your working day starts, you’ll focus more effectively on your plans.
